The World Bank has raised its growth forecast for East Asia and Pacific to 4.5% this year, 0.3 percentage points above its April projection, driven by exports linked to artificial intelligence (AI). Vietnam received the largest upgrade, to 7.4%. AI-related goods account for more than half of export growth in most economies and over 70% in Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The bank warns that a reversal in AI spending would be material for the region.
United States President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday to expand access to tax-exempt diesel, as prices hit a record of about $6.50 a gallon last month. The order waives the off-road requirement for dyed diesel and defers the federal excise tax on its on-road use for the rest of the year, without interest or penalties. High fuel costs are a risk for Trump ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, with his approval rating at 32%.
German industrial orders fell 10.6% in August from the previous month, far worse than the 1.0% decline analysts expected. The drop was entirely due to a 61.5% fall in other transport equipment, after large orders for ships, trains and aircraft more than doubled the category in July. Excluding large-scale orders, new orders were 0.1% lower. Domestic orders declined 17.3% and foreign orders 5.4%. Orders in the three months to August were 1.3% higher than in the previous three months.
