Global agricultural commodity prices rose over 13% in August, the sharpest monthly increase in fourteen years, driven by the war around the Black Sea, heatwaves and El Nino. Wheat reached its highest level in more than three years, trading at $7.84 per bushel, up 18% from July and 50% since the start of the year. Corn rose nearly 16%, while cotton gained 14.5% in August and 44% year to date. Developing countries face growing concerns over food price inflation.
India’s economy grew 7.8% in the quarter ending June, beating a Reuters poll estimate of 7.1% and matching the previous quarter. Growth was driven by financial, real estate, information technology and professional services sectors, while agriculture remained weak. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had forecast 7.0% growth for the quarter and 6.7% for the financial year ending March 2027. Inflation rose to 4.45% in July, though the RBI held interest rates steady in August.
At the G20 finance meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged member countries to prioritize economic growth to address global debt, which reached nearly $353 trillion this year. Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh described a global investment surge reversing the savings glut. Bessent also pushed for isolating Iran over the Strait of Hormuz standoff and pressing China to rebalance its economy away from its $1.2 trillion trade surplus.
